Krystyna Durys, a vocalist endowed with a unique, warm timbre of her voice, can now boast her second album entitled “At the Movies”. The artist reaches for the most beautiful songs from the classics of American cinema. In addition to her six-person ensemble, the recordings feature a chamber orchestra. Invited guests add luster to the music.
Tina Guo, Hans Zimmer’s soloist, plays the cello in “The Gentle Rain”. Arturo Sandoval’s musicians – ten-time Grammy Award winner – Kemuel Roig and Ricardo “Tiki” Pasillas perform in “When You Wish Upon a Star”. A beautiful trumpet solo in “Smile” is played by Michael “Patches” Stewart (Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Brian Culbertson). Maciej Sikała, who for many years has won first place in Jazz Forum’s polls in the “Tenor Saxophone” category, is the soloist in “Over the Rainbow”.
The music we hear is characterized by stylistic diversity. Rich harmonies and noble sounds of jazz ballads intertwined with dynamic big-band pieces create a colorful musical mosaic. The whole is tied together by the extraordinary voice of Krystyna Durys.
The album consists of compositions from the repertoire of unforgettable Ladies of Jazz of the 20th century such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Anita O’Day, Ertha Kitt, Natalie Cole, Shirley Horn, Sarah Vaughan. The album was among the five best albums in the “Polish Jazz Record of the Year” category of the “Jazz Press” magazine, also nominated in the “Album of the Year” category in the “Jazz Top” poll of the “Jazz Forum” monthly.
“This CD should become the property of all fans of swinging jazz, jazz standards and classic big-band sounds. On top of that, everything is performed with bravado and great instrumental solos. On top of that we have great interpretations of vocal parts by Krystyna Durys, a jazz vocalist endowed with an interesting voice with a pleasant
and rich in aliquots. She sings with energy and knowledge of stylistic conditions. Flawlessly and competently. (…)” (review in “Jazz Forum”, by Piotr Kałużny).
Krystyna Durys – vocalist fascinated by swing, Dixieland and bossa nova trends, inspired mainly by performances of the Queen of Jazz Ella Fitzgerald. She has received grants from the STOART Association of Performing Artists, the Pomeranian Voivodship Marshal’s Office and the City of Gdansk. Laureate of GOLDEN TARKA at 44th Old Jazz Meeting in Iława. Winner of the 2nd place in the category NEW HOPE in JAZZ TOP poll. Nominated in the Vocalist of the Year category of the JAZZ TOP poll. Nominated for Grand Prix of Łódź Jazz Lovers Association in category MUSIC LOVERS’ HOPE.
Her adventure with the stage began at the age of 7 with a children’s vocal and dance group operating at the Culture House in Sopot and continued as a member of two youth choirs operating at the Culture House in Gdynia. The following years brought a fascination with jazz classics and the swing era. The greatest influence on her vocal and stage development had American jazz vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Pattie Austin and Natalie Cole. In 2012, in collaboration with excellent Tri-City musicians, Krystyna formed her first swing quintet. In 2016, a trumpeter and trombonist joined the band. Thanks to the brass section, the band gained a wider sound characteristic for swing music. Currently the band consists of: Paweł Hulisz (trumpet/flugehorn), Marcin Janek (saxophones/clarinet), Adam Wiśniewski (trombone), Marek Jurski (piano, arrangements), Jarosław Stokowski (double bass), Adam Zagrodzki (drums). Arrangements: Marek Jurski, Artur Jurek, Henryk Wieczyński.
