BIO

Krystyna Durys

Polish jazz vocalist fascinated with swing era and inspired mainly by the work of The Queen of Jazz – Ella Fitzgerald. Krystyna Durys is mostly a self-tought singer with enormous love for jazz standards. Winner of the FIRST PRIZE at the 44th International Old Jazz Meeting – the oldest and most known contest for jazz vocalists in Poland. Winner of the 2nd place in the category of THE NEW HOPE and nominated in the category of THE BEST FEMALE VOCALIST in JAZZ TOP servey (2017). She was also nominated to the Grand Prix of The Jazz Lovers Association (Poland) in the category of THE NEW HOPE OF JAZZ LOVERS (2017). Right after releasing her first album in September 2016 she was invited to perform at the biggest jazz festival in the world – JAVA JAZZ FESTIVAL (Indonesia) with her band and also with Ron King Big Band (USA), at BALTIC SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL (Denmark) and at the one of the most known polish jazz festivals LADIES’ JAZZ (Poland) among others.

Krystyna began her advanture with singing at the age of 7. After being a member of a vocal-dance group and two choirs for a few years, journeying trough different genries and evolving her singing skills she got interested in jazz. She started taking vocal trainig and attending jazz workshops led by top polish jazz singers but most of her education is based on listening to the best jazz vocalists of the swing era like Ella Fitgerald or Sarah Vaughan among others. She started working with various jazz musicians from her hometown Three City learning jazz standards and stagecraft. Till 2012 Krystyna cooperated with Jan Konop Big Band (Poland), Riverboat Ramblers Swing Orchestra (Poland/ Ukraine) and later with Take It Easy – a jazz band founded by one of the most known saxophonists in Poland Przemek Dyakowski developing a stagecraft and audience rapport that has come to characterise her live shows.

In 2012 in cooperation with marvolous jazz musicians and friends Marek Jurski (pianist, composer, arranger), Marcin Janek (saxophonist/ clarinetist), Maciej Sadowski (double bassist) and Adam Zagrodzki (drummer) Krystyna started her own band. After 4 years of performing in quintet at the beginning of 2016 two aoutstanding musicians – Paweł Hulisz (trumpetist, flugehornist) and Adam Wiśniewski (trombonist) joined the band. Thanks to the horn section the band got a further boost up and gained a big band sound which Krystyna loves.

In September 2016 Krystyna released her first album TRIBUTE TO LADIES OF JAZZ. Top polish jazz stars appeared on the album as special guests: Włodzimierz Nahorny, Przemek Dyakowski, Robert Majewski, Wojciech Staroniewicz. Beautiful and fresh arrangements were made by: Artur Jurek, Marek Jurski and Henryk Wieczyński. More than 20 musicians were involved in the making of this album. The album collected marvelous reviews gaining great sympathy of listeners and asteem of the hosts of jazz broadcasts across Poland. It was nominated as one of the 5 POLISH JAZZ ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2016 in JAZZ PRESS servey and nominated in the category THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2016 in JAZZ TOP servey.
